Why do men need mentors?

Why are mentors so important today?

We live in a society dominated by consumerism, exploitation and competitiveness. Surrounded by friends, yet often feeling isolated, anxious and confused, many young men are unsure what it means to be a man. They haven’t been shown how to operate in this world, discover their purpose or live consistently with their values.

Similarly many older men wonder what the years they spent building and achieving have been for. Their careers are either nearing the end or finished altogether. Somewhere over the horizon looms the end of life itself. Despite the presence of friends, family and colleagues, these men often feel alone as they face redundancy, boredom, illness, bereavement and relationship break down. No one stands alongside them as they work their way through.

It's no surprise men of all ages are struggling to maintain their well-being and mental health, suffering from bitterness, anger, depression, addictions, violence and even suicide, and inflicting pain on those around them.

Men need the support of other men to help them navigate though these challenges. The stakes are massive for our culture. Our capacity to maintain civility, humanity and nobility is being lost.

" There was a time back at uni in Canada I felt very stuck. I hated my course and didn't know what to do with my life. It seemed there was no one to talk to. I was befriended by a lecturer called John. I enjoyed his English sense of humour and clever mind. He offered me work helping with his research. Over beers he got me to start thinking about what future I really wanted. Thanks to John, I applied to study in the UK. That led to opportunities to work all over the world. My life was never the same. John and I are still friends after 40 years. I realise now how few people have benefitted from a mentor like John. I started Men's Business in 2016 to change that.

We equip mature men with the skills and confidence to offer themselves as mentors to other men in their communities, families and workplaces. We encourage the formation of local mentor groups to acquire new skills, inspire each other, and grow and develop as human beings. A mentoring movement will emerge creating connections across generations and webs of new relationships, strengthening the very fabric of our society."
